The hotels were fabulous, the local reps efficient and charming (especially Mr Cha Raat in Siem Reap, who gave us a brilliant temples tour), the airlines bang on, and I want to go back next week……! If we find anyone else wishing to go to South East Asia, we will send them straight to you. Having a guide in Bangkok was unexpected and a great idea! Boeing, our guide, was absolutely brilliant with us. We went on three tours with him and his friendliness, knowledge and manner were absolutely first class. He certainly helped to make our time in Bangkok much more enjoyable and memorable. Our guide in Patong, Sam, was also first class. We organised two trips whilst in Patong, to James Bond Island and to Phi-Phi Island. Unfortunately, the trip to Phi Phi was cancelled twice due to the weather and Sam helped organise a refund if the money paid at the airport before departure. The flights, transfers and accommodation were all superb and couldnt have been better. It was a bit rainy, but what do you expect in the middle of the monsoon season?!? Thank you once again. I have no doubt that the next time we go to south east Asia, we will be contacting yourself first due to the value and the service from Ninety East. I have also recommended you to a number of friends who have asked about our trip. I will have no problem recommending you to others in the future. First class service from start to finish! This is something of a hidden gem. I travel often to the Far East on business, mainly centred around Hong Kong and I've finally discovered what all the HKG locals and Ex Pats have been keeping a secret. Just a 2 hour flight lands you in Cebu, Philippines and what a wonderful place it is. For the first time in Feb this year, my family of wife and two children (one of each aged 9 & 7) accompanied me to HKG and after two days of business we flew with Cathay to Cebu. All organised by www.ninetyeast.co.uk (they do all my business travel too and are sooooooo helpful with changing schedules etc.) Anyway, the hotel is just 15 mins from the airport and is one of the best I've ever stayed in, probably THE best. Nothing is any trouble for the staff. Polite, friendly, helpful, attentive but never overbearing, just there in the background whenever you needed them. The hotel has everything, two great pools, a private beach, every kind of watersport, lovely gardens if you needed the shade with relaxing hammocks etc. There was nothing we could want that it didn't have, and that includes the Kids!! Food great - if you wanted the buffet, it had 7 stations all with different food - Sushi, Indian, Chinese, Western, Malaysian, Philippine and Carvery, all fresh seafood was spectacular. It also has 4 other restaurants which we tried and the staff went out of there way be helpful. When you are out of the hotel prices are cheap (with a little negotiation) and one key fact is that due to the American occupation years ago, almost everyone speaks English, even the street sellers. The Philippino people always seem a genuinely happy/warm bunch, never seen so many smiles! I don't normally write reviews, too busy but this one deserves 10/10, I could go on for ages about this place but if your considering having a break in the Far East I would suggest you try Cebu, and my vote would be for the Shangri La. You'll probably see me there, I'm trying to build a few days of R&R into my trips from now on. 07 April 2011 14:51 Drive & Race package in Dubai Experience the spirit of speed and take advantage of our adrenalin pumping Drive & Race packages. The latest census puts the population of the big cat at 1,706. There were 1,411 tigers at the last count in 2007. The count included 70 tigers in the Sundarbans tiger reserve, which had not been covered in the last census. India, with more than 45,000 sq km (27,961 miles) of forest area under 39 designated tiger reserves, had 100,000 tigers at the turn of the last century. Since then there has been an alarming decline in numbers with 97% of tigers lost to poaching and shrinking habitats. Today, fewer than 3,500 tigers remain in the wild around the globe with India accounting for more than half of them. 24 March 2011 09:44 Chiang Mai Songkran FestivalChiang Mai Songkran Festival Date : April 12-15, 2011 Venue: Chiang Mai, Thailand The History of Songkran Deriving from the Sanskrit language, the word Songkran means to pass or to move into. In this context, the meaning implies to the passing and the moving of the sun, the moon and the other planets into one of the zodiacal orbits. And the Grand Songkran Festival which falls in Aries indicates the new era of the Thai New Year. Owing to the ancient Indian belief, the Grand Songkran Festival is most appropriate to be the Thai New Year due to the timing of the best season which is known as the spring of India which comes right after the cold season of winter. Also, there are other aspects supporting this belief such as blooming flowers, the fresh atmosphere of nature and the livelihood of all living creatures. With the great influence from the Indians, the Songkran Festival portrays the typical ways of life of the Thais which involve the agricultural aspects. Free from their regular routine work, the Thai citizens will find time to perform their annual rites of showing respect to their ancestors. The highlight of the festival will include the younger Thais paying respect to their elders by sprinkling their hands with scented water. And in order to welcome the New Year, the celebration will include the delightful colourful local entertainment, which in fact, suitably unites the mutual relationship between members of the family, society, nature and the surroundings. Therefore, this Songkran Festival has proved to be the most important and grandest festival of the year. Moreover, our neighbouring countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia and Lao PDR. have also organised this type of festival. During the Sukhothai period, the Songkran Festival was practised both in the royal court palace and among the ordinary citizens. However, the size of the celebration was not as elaborate as of today. Back in those days, civil servants and other government officials would pay homage to the king, and would drink the oath of allegiance to the king or the government, while the king would provide an annual salary to all officials. Later on in the Ayutthaya period, the festival was expanded by including the bathing of the Buddha image. Also, the festivities would include the forming of sand pagodas and entertaining celebrations. In the Rattanakosin period, the rituals have been conducted in a similar pattern as those during the Ayutthaya period. 22 March 2011 11:08 Escape to the tropics and save 20% Book any of the following offers before the 31st of March and save an incredible 20% by quoting code NL032011 10 night escorted coach tour of Sri Lanka from £1399 per person 14 nights on the magical island of Bali from £1499 per person 7 nights at the 5* One & Only St Geran Mauritius from £1875 per person http://ninetyeast-mail.co.uk/t/4AU-E3VQ-07CG5ZK00/cr.aspx 22 March 2011 11:12 2011 Finals of the Moto GP World Championship in JapanUnfortunately due to the recent devastating events in Japan this event has been cancelled 24 April 2011 Final for the Moto GP World Championship ![]() The streets of Japan, the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer, are filled with famous motorcycle brands such as Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha and Kawasaki. The Best in Travel 2010 presents the top ten countries, regions and cities to visit in 2010, chosen by Lonely Planet’s global team members comprising authors, travelers and writers. Lonely Planet describes Malaysia as ‘Diversity is what Malaysia is all about’. From Kuala Lumpur to the near wilds of Borneo, there are mountains, beaches, coral reefs and malls. The listing is even more meaningful as Malaysia is the only Asian country in the top ten countries for 2010. Some of the event and festivals highlighted in the latest guidebook include the Hin Thaipusam, Harvest Festival in Sabah and Sarawak, Dragon Boat Festival in Penang, as well as the Rainforest World Music Festival in Sarawak. There is also a special mention about the Iskandar Malaysia project which it describes as a city being constructed from scratch in the Johor state on a plot of land three times the size of Singapore. It hopes to one day welcome approximately three million inhabitants and rival Asia’s biggest metropolitan cities. In addition, the guide has also identified Malaysia as one of the Best Value Destinations for 2010, promoting Malaysia as a clever choice for travelers on the lookout for a bargain. It points out Malaysia’s well-developed tourism industry offering a wide range of accommodation, from fine resorts to low-cost places to stay, such as the traditional wooden kampong houses on the beach or in the jungle; its low-priced flights such as AirAsia X; and its affordable food (approximately USD 7.50 for a three-course meal). The book also suggests that readers visit the tropical paradise of the Perhentian Islands. Bangkok is a lively bustling capital, with all of Thai culture waiting to be explored - no matter what the visitor's interests. Spend a morning in the grounds of the 18th century Grand Palace or hire a long tail boat and explore the Klongs (canals). Alternatively experience some of the best Thai cuisine at one of the many gourmet restaurants or shop for incredible bargains at countless market stalls, Bangkok appeals to every possible taste. Siem Reap is the gateway to the temples of Angkor, Cambodia's spiritual and cultural heartland. It was a quiet and sleepy backwater until a few years ago and even now, in the midst of the tourism boom, it remains a charming atmospheric town with rural qualities. It is a must to explore the ancient collection of temples documenting the power of the Khmer empire and in particular the spectacular Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. Phnom Penh sits at the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Bassac and Tonle Sap Rivers. Long considered the loveliest of the French-built cities of Indo-China, its charm, while tarnished, has largely managed to survive the violence of its recent history. You can discover the horrors of Pol Pot's reign and the crimes of the Khmer Rouge with visits to the poignant Tuol Sleng Museum (Security Prison 21) and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. How to enter Just follow this link to the Wanderlust Ninety East Competition, log in to your Wanderlust account (or register with them if you don't already have one), answer the question below and fill in your details in the form.
