Oman![]() About OmanOman has a sense of timelessness in the ancient interior city of Nizwa, the towns along the coast, the capital itself Muscat and the southern city of Salalah. All are steeped in history and tradition. The sultanate enjoys an unspoiled culture and traditional lifestyle in almost every aspect. Even in its modernity, Oman is distinctly Arab and offers the visitor a glimpse of many unique old-world wonders. Like the gulf states to its north, Oman offers the usual "Arabian Nights" stopovers: ride a camel, bash a dune and sleep under the stars in a six-star tent. There are camping and trekking, surfing and diving or just idling around the pool at luxury hotels and resorts. But beyond all that, there's history; a rich past drawing together the ancient world and the modern, the east and the west that is Oman.

Muscat, Oman's capital is very different from the functional, futuristic capitals of the other Gulf states or the urban sprawl of Cairo, Amman or Tehran it has kept much of its old world charm. Muscat is the starting point for tours and attractions which include the Al Alam Palace, pretty whitewashed buildings, gold capped minarets, manicured lawns, tree lined boulevards, the sweeping corniche alongside the Arabian Sea and bustling Muttrah souk. Another landmark is the five towered fort at Sohar, a two-hour drive outside Muscat and a popular stop on a touring itinerary.
