CambodiaAbout CambodiaCambodia is one of the most fascinating destinations in Asia, home of the majestic Angkor Wat, one of the most impressive sights in the world. Once the political, economical and religious centre of the mighty Khmer Empire; during the Angkorian Period this empire included much of what is now Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, and was the cultural heartland of Southeast Asia. Isolated from the outside world for decades, visitors now have the opportunity to discover the awe-inspiring Hindu/Buddhist shrines of Angkor hidden deep in the jungles of Northern Cambodia, and wander along the laid-back boulevards of Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, glimpsing ornate Khmer temples of old. Contemporary Cambodia has a lot more to offer the visitor than its ancient cultural heritage; there are also undiscovered beaches, mighty rivers, Tonle Sap lake and dense tropical rainforests to explore. Situated at the confluence of three rivers, the mighty Mekong, the Bassac and the great Tonle Sap, it was once considered the 'Gem' of Indochina. The capital city still maintains considerable charm with plenty to see. It exudes a sort of provincial charm and tranquillity with its French colonial mansions and tree-lined boulevards amidst monumental Angkorian architecture. Phnom Penh is a veritable oasis compared to the modernity of other Asian capitals. A mixture of Asian exotica, the famous Cambodian hospitality awaits the visitors to the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia.
Siem Reap is located in northwest Cambodia and is a major tourist hub, as it is the closest city to the world famous temples of Angkor. Tonle Sap Lake, the greatest sweet water reserve in the whole of South East Asia, is located in the South of the province. The name of the city literally means "Siamese defeated", referring to the victory of the Khmer Empire over the army of the Thai kingdom in the 17th century.
