About Indonesia

Indonesia or The republic of Indonesia is a nation in Southeast Asia.  Comprising 17,508 islands, it is the world's largest archipelagic state.  With a population of over 234 million people, it is the world's fourth most populous country.   The capital, Jakarta, is on Java and is the nation's largest city, followed by Surabaya, Bandung, Medan, and Semarang.   Bali has long been the most popular tourist destination in Indonesia but there is so much more to see for the adventurous traveller.   The Indonesian archipelago has been an important trade region since at least the seventh century, when the Srivijaya kingdom formed trade links with China.   Across its many islands, Indonesia consists of distinct ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups.  The Javanese are the politically dominant and largest ethnic group.  Indonesia has around 400 ethnic groups, each with cultural differences developed over centuries, and influenced by Arabic, Chinese, Malay, and european sources. Traditional Javanese and Balinese dances, for example, contain aspects of Hindu culture and mythology, as do wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performances.   Textiles such as batik, ikat and songket are created across Indonesia in styles that vary by region.   Many places of interest and natural beauty both on land and in the sea are waiting to be explored; a fascinating culture, warm hospitality, a spectacular underwater world, or simply sunbathing on one of the white and pristine beaches at a luxury resort in Indonesia.

Borobudur Temple, Java, Indonesia

Java is home to 60% of the Indonesian population - 120 million people in an area half the size of Great Britain.  A long, narrow island, Java is divided into five provinces - West, Central, Yogyakarta, East Java and most recently, Banten since 2001.  There are also two ‘special regions'in Java, Jakarta, the nation's capital, and Yogyakarta, the center of Javanese culture.  Also of note are the volcanoes that dot the island, the most famous of which is Krakatau, although Bromo in the south (accessible from Bali) is the most beautiful, the ascent of which can be made by mountain pony.

Jakarta is the political and economic hub of Indonesia and is the center for most businesses in the country as well as home to nightclubs, glitzy restaurants and international-style shopping malls.  You may either love it or hate it, but beneath the smog and busy streets, Jakarta has a particular character all of its own that makes it a memorable place to visit.  Visit the bird markets or learn the recent history of independence from the national monuments, landmarks and museums that all have stories to tell of this nation's path to freedom.

Lombok, Indonesia

Lombok is less than an hour's flight from Bali, and equal in beauty, yet a world apart.  Unspoilt and unhurried, there is a saying that Lombok is what Bali was 20 years ago.  Lombok is enriched with rugged landscape of unspoiled earth, endless rice paddies, fruit orchards and majestic jungle hills.  The island also offers pristine beaches, excellent for snorkelling and diving, as well as the breath-taking Mt. Rinjani volcano, all complemented with rural villages and waterfalls.  Although the island is predominately Muslim, much of the population still maintain animist traditions with strong roots to their ancestral culture, just like the Balinese people.  If your holiday choice includes 'unspoilt' then a visit to the charming island of Lombok is a must.
