About Vietnam

Vietnam less developed than some of its neighbours has an intriguing history and culture.  Highlights include Hanoi, with its tree-fringed lakes and shaded avenues of French villas; Ho Chi Minh with its Chinese and French areas; and Hoi An, a historic trading port with a charming town of cobblestone lanes leading through neighbourhoods of 200 year old merchants' houses.   Visitors to Vietnam are overwhelmed by the sublime beauty of the country's natural settings: the red River Delta in the north, the Mekong Delta in the south and almost the entire coastal strip are a patchwork of brilliant green rice paddies tended by women in conical hats, along with its rich cultural heritage, and the deep humanity of its people.  Discover a country lined with untouched beaches; its soaring mountains, dense, misty forests and bustling city hubs that represent a nation which really is open for business.  Top-class golf courses, fine dining and all levels of accommodation options - from boutique bungalow retreats to 5-star resorts and spas can be found in hotspots around Vietnam.

Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is a graceful city of lakes, tree-lined boulevards, elegant squares, and leafy public parks.  Wander through the timeless Old Quarter and admire the crumbling colonial architecture in a maze of small alleyways.  Many ancient architectural features are still preserved in Hanoi, particularly in the fascinating warren of streets in the Old Quarter.  There are over 600 pagodas and numerous lakes and parks, where locals gather on weekends and in the evenings.  The most notable lakes are Hoan Kiem Lake in the heart of the city, and the vast expanse of West Lake.  Popular sights include Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, the One-Pillar Pagoda, Ngoc Son Temple and Vietnam's first university, the Temple of Literature.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh is a bustling cosmopolitan city known for its markets and architecture.  Ho Chi Minh City never sleeps.  Everywhere you look there is colour and movement.  Schoolgirls on bicycles, their traditional white "Ao Dai" tunics fluttering in the breeze; vendors engulfed in bright bubbles of balloons or pushing carts heaped with wares.  The French influence is still apparent in Ho Chi Minh City - from the tree-lined boulevards to the imposing villas and colonial architecture.  Although relatively modern, Ho Chi Minh City has still managed to hold onto its Asian character in this city where fine restaurants, smart hotels and chic bars line the streets crammed with noodle stands, markets and shoeshine boys.

Hoi An is an exquisite gem of a town.  Once it was a thriving seaport where sailors and traders from all corners of the world engaged in business activities.  Strolling leisurely through the delightful traffic-free streets, you will notices old residences with architectural influences from China, Europe and Japan. The numerous galleries located in ancient houses are a delight for souvenir hunters.  Hoi An has a distinct Chinese atmosphere with low, tile-roofed houses and narrow streets; the original structure of some of these streets still remains intact.  All the houses were made of rare wood, decorated with lacquered boards and panels engraved with Chinese characters.  Pillars were also carved with ornamental designs.  This lovely place, remarkably well preserved, is a highlight of any visit to Vietnam.

Nha Trang has a 7 km long white sandy beach which is known as Vietnam's Mediterranean coast.  It is sunny all year round, with an average temperature of 20°C.  Nha Trang has less rainfall than any where else in the country as the Truong Son Mountains Ca Pass protects it from storms.  The magnificent coral seabed in Nha Trang makes it ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling from March to September.
