"Vientiane is perhaps the most unassuming capital city you’ll ever visit. Huddled within a wide bend of the Mekong, the conveniently compact metropolis goes about its business, not straying far from the leisurely Lao pace."

Aging French mansions, art deco Russian buildings and eye-catching Buddhist temples make up the cityscape of Vientiane, with broad, leafy boulevards providing perfect pedestrian pathways.

The city may seem slow and sleepy, but in the twenty odd years since Laos reopened its doors to foreign visitors, the capital has evolved a lot. Today there are plenty of hotels, bars and restaurants along the pretty streets, but the commercialisation hasn’t diminished the charm of the tree-lined dirt roads, tranquil temples and ever-friendly locals.
